Curiosity Rover gets back to work after ‘coffee break’

Earlier this month, the Curiosity rover curiously put itself into safe mode. However, as of July 11, the rover has resumed full operational status following the efforts of NASA engineers.
On July 2, NASA reported that Curiosity entered into safe mode and ceased performing its tasks except maintaining itself and following a prescribed procedure for resuming communication with ground control.
Engineers said the most likely cause for the safe mode was a software mismatch in one mode with regards to how image data are transferred on board. They are now avoiding using that mode for scienctific activity planning to prevent another entry into safe mode. An alternative means of handling and transmitting image data is now being used.
NASA also approved an additional two-year extension for the Mars Science Laboratory Project, which will begin on Oct. 1, 2016. Alfred Bayle
