Wayne Nickerson has been catching lobsters for 35 years and this is actually not the first time that he’s picked up a blue lobster.  Image Jan Nickerson

Lobsterman Wayne Nickerson would have never guessed what he would find when he hauled in his lobster traps one Monday morning off the waters of Plymouth, Massachusetts, in the US: a rare bright blue lobster.

Nickerson’s wife, Jan, said, “It was more brilliantly blue than the bluest hydrangea you’ve ever seen. It was almost fluorescent. It was almost glowing.”

Aptly named Bleu, it weighed 2 pounds which was also rare among lobsters, according to Tony Lacasse, spokesman for the New England Aquarium, Boston Globe reported. However, this was not the first blue lobster Nickerson caught. The first one was back in 1990 and was displayed in a tank at a Manomet lobster pound.

LaCasse said there have been multiple local sightings reported recently. If the 1 in 2 million odds are correct, there should be around 50 found around the area.

Nickerson showed off the blue lobster to children from a local boat tour, much to their excitement and his pleasure.

He said he separated Bleu from the rest of the lobsters and placed it in a secure and safe location because the other lobsters were often aggressive.  Alfred Bayle
