Tidal was the first music streaming service to offer lossless-quality audio. However, Spotify appears to be catching up and is already prepping to launch its own lossless offering.

Engadget reports that sources from The Verge and Reddit users were the ones to make the discovery regarding Spotify’s upcoming lossless offering, dubbed “Spotify Hi-Fi”. It is said that a $20 (about P2,000) monthly subscription will allow customers to stream lossless-quality music fit for any audiophile setup.

The move will not only allow Spotify to one up Tidal but also to get ahead of Apple Music and its other rivals that are still utilizing lossy formats like MP3.

Spotify currently has over 40 million-plus Premium customers. Having even just a fraction of this convert to hi-fi could even prove lucrative for the company. Alfred Bayle/JB
