WATCH: ‘Play-o-Wave’ keeps you busy with retro games while cooking your food
Inventors and tinkerers just never run out of ways to turn ordinary, everyday items into whatever they fancy.
This time around, the humble microwave, wonderful warmer of our leftover pizzas and best buddy of the culinarily-challenged, was given a makeover.
Article continues after this advertisementSince waiting all two minutes for food to heat can get quite boring for some, Colin Furze revealed on his YouTube channel (“Furze’s Invention Show”) a solution: the “Play-o-Wave.” It’s a microwave oven equipped with a screen where users can play several retro games while waiting for food to cook.
Microwave radiation is naturally disruptive to electronics, so a layer of shielding needed to be added behind the LCD screen. Otherwise, the screen would not be able to function when the microwave is heating up something. This made the door a little bit thicker than on an average microwave.
Being a prototype, as Furze claims it to be, it appears that the “Play-o-Wave” only has RCA ports. It’s a shame because the NES Classic Edition only connects through HDMI. Another question that needs to be asked of this hybrid gaming console: “Can you play Doom on it?” JB
