Mobile chip maker Qualcomm revealed their latest fingerprint sensors during the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017. The company also demonstrated how the sensor works while embedded in a smartphone’s screen.

They call the technology Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors which includes next-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for smartphones and other devices.

The new technology’s features consist of sensors for display, glass and metal. Detection of directional gestures, underwater fingerprint matching and device wake-up is also included.

Qualcomm’s technology is designed as both an integrated solution for Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile devices, and as standalone sensors that can be used with non-Snapdragon devices, like the iPhone 8 for instance.

Earlier rumors of the iPhone 8 speculated on an in-screen fingerprint sensor. With Qualcomm’s technology revealed, it reinforces the possibilities that the upcoming iPhone 8 may indeed include a fingerprint sensor on its screen. With the removal of the home button and extension of the screen to occupy most of the iPhone 8’s front side, a screen embedded fingerprint sensor certainly makes sense. JB
