A project inspired by anime fans who are less artistically inclined, this artificial intelligence program can generate anime girls based on user preferences.
Called “MakeGirls” the software is currently available online. To generate the image of an anime girl, users will need to determine the features that they want to have, or they can completely randomize the process. Glasses, hair color, hairstyle and smile are some of the customizable parameters.
Once satisfied, the user simply needs to press the “generate” button. After a few seconds, an image will appear in a little portrait box above it.
The artificial intelligence behind this program is not always accurate in creating a pretty anime girl but its success rate is fairly good.
When it does get things wrong, the resulting image would be a somewhat disfigured girl, which appear to have random parts of a picture slapped together like a collage.
The generated images are not very big and are just large enough to be used as a profile photo. On the other hand, game developers and artists may use this program as a starting point in creating a new character, be it for an illustration or a game.
Apart from being free to use, netizens may share their generated anime girls on Twitter .
The team behind MakeGirls is composed of individuals from the Carnegie Mellon University, Fudan University, Stony Brook University and Tongji University. A technical report titled “Create Anime Characters with A.I.” was published which detailed the team’s study.
They noted that MakeGirls is not the first anime image generator created. However, it was pointed out that existing software similar to MakeGirls often generated blurry and disfigured results. JB
