Nothing signals the widespread adaptation of artificial intelligence than its growing presence in everyday gadgets, like smartphones. By the end of 2018, all newly-released electronic devices may have some form of AI lurking inside their systems.
Samsung has been reported by The Korea Herald to be in the process of developing and eventually commercializing “AI chips.” These chips will be designed for smartphones, and even appliances.
“(Samsung) is in the middle of researching and developing several types of chips that will be capable of processing massive data from AI applications on devices, eliminating the need to communicate with cloud servers,” the report quotes and industrial source from one of Samsung’s partners.
This move by the Korean tech company may be late compared to its competitors Qualcomm, Apple and Huawei, but it offers a clear picture that AI is here to stay.
The industry source went so far as to predict a 50 percent improvement in AI chip processing power for smartphones within the next three years.
So far, the chips capable of AI processing that are known or are available in the market include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, Apple’s A11 Bionic and Huawei’s Kirin 970. Alfred Bayle/JB
