The Huawei Asia-Pacific Innovation Day kicked off its 2017 gathering of technology experts today at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This annual event also bore the announcement of a Huawei OpenLab, being constructed in the country.

The OpenLab acts as a hub where Huawei can work with its local partners to pursue innovative projects. OpenLabs have already been setup in various countries including China, Dubai, Mexico, Munich and Singapore.

Constructing this facility in Malaysia also coincides with the event’s themes of openness, innovation, collaboration and shared success.

During his speech, Huawei’s deputy chairman of the board and CEO, Guo Ping, discussed four layers of digital transformation needs that a country must satisfy to develop digitally.

A country would need proper information and communications technology infrastructure, security solutions, a supportive environment for developing digitally, and a way to enable broader information sharing.

“We need to collaborate more broadly and share views across the ecosystem, including between industries and universities worldwide,” said Guo.

He added, “Close collaboration between industry and academia will help ensure a thriving digital economy.”

Guo stressed that technological innovation and an open ecosystem are critical to the success of digital initiatives.

One of the collaborative efforts between a Malaysian company called ofo and Huawei pertains to a shared bike service. Huawei helped embed Internet of Things chips into the bicycles. This allowed the system to use artificial intelligence and offer personalized services to the public.

Co-hosting the event with Huawei were Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry, the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation, and the Malaysia-China Business Council.

The Huawei Asia-Pacific Innovation Day debuted in 2013. It has since been held in London, Milan, Munich, Paris, Singapore, and Sydney. JB
