‘Wakanda’ searches peak on hotel booking site
Searches for the fictional kingdom of Wakanda from “Black Panther” have surged on a hotel booking site since the movie’s US premiere.
A statement from the hotel-booking site Hotels.com said searches for Wakanda Park in Menomonie, Wisconsin, have gone up by 50 percent in the last two months. Those who make the trip to Wakanda Park may not find any cutting-edge, vibranium-based technology, but they can have some fun at the water park.
Other locations around the world that sound like “Wakanda” have also seen a sudden increase in searches. Wacounda, Illinois, saw a 25-percent rise, while Makanda, also in Illinois, was up 40 percent.
The Wakaya island resort in Fiji saw a massive 235-percent spike.
Wakanai, a city in Hokkaido, Japan, where visitors can find the country’s northernmost point, had a more modest 55-percent increase in searches.
The booking site also said, “The film has touched the hearts and minds of millions of film fans around the world. We regularly see that pop culture inspires travel choices and in a surprising way, this is no exception.” /ra
