A robotic suit or “underwear” has been designed to give humans mechanical assistance while still looking stylish.
The Powered Clothing by US company Seismic took the technology of bulky mechanical exoskeletons and placed them inside a comfortable underwear to assist wearers with their posture while also providing a boost in mobility, reports Tech Crunch.
Seismic CEO Rich Mahoney insisted that Powered Clothing is very different from the more commonly known power suit. For one, Powered Clothing will not be powerful enough to augment a person’s physical strength and endurance. Powersuits simply provide assistance to the wearer by reducing fatigue through a movement support system.
The elderly in particular can benefit from this kind of technology due to their deteriorating physical condition. The Powered Clothing can help support their posture while providing assistance in walking and other physical activities. For the younger users, the technology can help increase stamina and help them accomplish more without the bulk of current robotic exoskeletons. Because Powered Clothing is made of softer material, it can be worn discreetly underneath normal clothing.
For now the Seismic Powered Clothing is limited to supporting the lower back and the thighs. Eventually the company wants to cover full limbs and further assist users in the consumer market.
Mahoney said, “We really have to think about what people understand and how we can bring functionality to clothing, while maintaining comfort, aesthetics and emotion. Really, our company is a fusion of apparel and robotics.” Alfred Bayle /ra
