First-ever AI e-bike aims to protect riders from accidents

Artificial intelligence is transforming many facets of everyday life, including transportation. For example, Amazon and other companies are testing autonomous drones that automatically deliver goods and return to their docking stations using AI. Consequently, it is unsurprising to see the humble bike get AI upgrades.

New York-based startup Orbic unveiled the world’s first 5G-enabled, AI-powered e-bike. Its main feature is its AI object avoidance system, which alerts riders to potential dangers like oncoming vehicles. The Orbic 5G eBike also has 5G integration, giving users access to real-time maps and a way to connect with fellow e-bike riders. 

What do we know about the AI e-bike?

The Orbic electric bicycle’s outstanding feature is its AI hazard avoidance system that alerts riders to potential hazards. It uses a sensor that provides a 140° field of view of the bike’s rear.

In a statement, the company said it provides instant audio and visual alerts to provide awareness and safety using AI. Moreover, the bicycle has multiple cameras to improve safety and rider experience. 

A 2MP rear camera enhances collision avoidance and object detection. Also, a 64MP camera lets you capture and livestream trips on your AI e-bike.

Furthermore, an 8MP camera lets riders make video calls. The AI bicycle also has a 7-inch all-weather touchscreen display that shows the following data:

• Battery status
• Speed
• Distance
• Maps
• Tracking
• Other features

“By integrating 5G connectivity and AI technology, we aim to redefine the riding experience, making it safer, more connected, and more environmentally responsible,” said CEO Mike Narula.

The Orbic eBike is 5G-ready to ensure its online features work smoothly. It can function as a Wi-Fi hotspot to extend internet connectivity anywhere.

Of course, this AI-powered two-wheeled vehicle works like other e-bikes, letting riders travel up to 45 kph. It can be charged like any other electric vehicle to ensure eco-friendliness.

“The 5G e-Bike represents a significant leap forward in electronic mobility, and we are excited about bringing this new technology to cities across the globe,” Narula added. 

Orbic’s Senior Vice President Hugo Hernandez told PCMag the company will start shipping the AI eBike at the end of 2024’s 2nd quarter. However, it is still exploring pricing options per market and telecom partner.
