What is an AI PC, and would you need one?
Microsoft recently announced that it will release its first AI PC line called Copilot+ PCs. Soon, other laptop and computer manufacturers will develop their AI-powered products.
That means AI-powered PCs could become a new “class” of computers. Sooner or later, you will have to replace your rig, meaning you might replace it with these AI machines.

Tech news website XDA-Developers said an AI PC is a computer with a Neural Processing Unit inside its CPU.
An NPU is specifically designed to handle AI programs. They perform 10 times more calculations per second than traditional CPU cores.
Article continues after this advertisementAI PCs enable you to run large language models and other AI programs locally. That means they will likely allow you to use artificial intelligence without an internet connection.
Microsoft is the first to announce its upcoming AI-powered computers called Copilot+ PCs. As the name suggests, it will have the AI chatbot Copilot built in along with these other AI apps:
- Adobe
- DaVinci Resolve Studio
- CapCut
- Cephable
- LiquidText
- Djay Pro
Microsoft says Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung will launch their Copilot+ PCs on June 18, 2024. Until then, we can only speculate on their real-life capabilities.
For example, cybersecurity firm Trend Micro says an AI-powered computer will let you do the following:
- Automate repetitive tasks
- Receive personalized music, book and movie recommendations
- Enhance productivity with AI-powered tools
- Stay ahead with the latest AI and machine learning technologies
However, the online security company warns users must be wary of the potential risks. These include data security, privacy concerns, malware and viruses.
