AGI: OpenAI shares its plan to develop super AI

The AI revolution may seem like a fad, but it will eventually lead to the creation of an AI that’s smarter than humans. Tech firms like OpenAI call it “Artificial General Intelligence” or AGI.

Bloomberg says its unnamed sources shared the AI firm’s five-step plan to develop AGI. Based on these steps, it seems the world is nearing step two.

Tech experts are about to create “reasoners.” These are AI models that can solve problems at par with a human with a doctorate degree and no textbook access.

What are OpenAI’s AGI plans?

Artificial general intelligence is advanced enough to replicate human behavior and mental capacities and surpass people in every task. Bloomberg’s sources say the ChatGPT creator will develop AGI by creating increasingly more sophisticated AI bots:

  1. Chatbots (Level 1): AI with natural conversation language abilities
  2. Reasoners (Level 2): AIs with human levels of problem-solving across a broad range of topics
  3. Agents (Level 3): AI systems that can take actions independently or from human instruction.
  4. Innovators (Level 4): AI that can aid in the invention of new ideas and contribute to human knowledge.
  5. Organizations (Level 5): AI that is capable of doing all of the work of an organization independently

Tom’s Guide shared more details regarding each step. Chatbots refer to ChatGPT and similar tools that can manage multi-threaded conversations, store memory, and perform limited reasoning.

Level 2 AI can perform “human-level problem solving,” which OpenAI is likely to achieve based on GPT-5’s capabilities.

“Agents” can create content or perform actions with minimal to no human input. Eventually, artificial intelligence will turn into “innovators,” adding to the sum of human knowledge instead of merely drawing from it.

For example, Level 4 AI would be able to invent new machines by itself. Lastly, Level 5 sees the realization of AGI, which can run entire organizations without human input.

OpenAI hasn’t confirmed these AGI steps at the time of writing. However, CEO Sam Altman believes humanity will develop artificial general intelligence in this decade.
