WATCH: AI writes sci-fi short film from ’90s screenplays

Artificial intelligence is getting more and more advanced, thanks to the efforts of companies such as Google. A self-named AI called Benjamin shows its creative chops by writing a screenplay.

According to The Next Web, Benjamin was fed dozens of ’80s and ’90s sci-fi movie screenplays. This culminated in a short entitled “Sunspring,” directed by Oscar Sharp and starring Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch. This endeavor was an entry for the 48-Hour Film Challenge at the Sci-Fi London festival.

While the dialogue and and the entire 9-minute film is quite absurd and disjointed, a certain pattern does seem to surface. The way the actors often say “I don’t know” and “I’m not sure” can be seen in various sci-fi movies where the characters are trying to grasp their current circumstance.

For now we can rest assured that creativity and the arts are still in the capable hands of human artists. But one day, we may encounter a symphony or a work of art entirely created by our own AI creations. Alfred Bayle
