MANILA, Philippines — Blackberry Messenger (BBM) consumer service, a popular messaging service that was initially exclusive to BlackBerry devices, is set to close on May 31, 2019.

Emtek, the Indonesia-based company that partnered with BlackBerry in 2016, just announced the closure in a blog post on Friday, April 18.

“Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on,” wrote Emtek.

The reason for the closure, according to Emtek, is that “users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on.”

“We are grateful for your support and wish to thank everyone, especially our users, partners, and employees, for being part of the BBM consumer service journey,” it added.

However, according to yugatech, BlackBerry,  in response to Emtek’s announcement, revealed a plan to open its enterprise-version of BBM to general consumers.

BBMe, the enterprise version of the app, will still continue its services and will be available to download on Android and iOS for free but with a $2.50 subscription fee for every six months.
