International hacktivist group leaks ‘PH social marketing plans’

MANILA, Philippines—International hacking group Anonymous early Saturday morning leaked two social marketing plans supposedly obtained from Malacañang.

Two spread sheet files were made available via Twitter by the hacktivist group detailing the work and financial plan of an unspecified Philippine government unit. The documents were approved by a certain Ana Marie P. Daep.

The tweet of Anonymous announcing the leak mentioned President Benigno Aquino’s official website president.gov.ph, but did not say if the documents were obtained from there.

Malacañang told INQUIRER.net it was not aware of any  official documents obtained and leaked by  Anonymous.

Palace unaware of leaked ‘government plans’

Hacktivists have been attacking mostly government sites since Aquino signed into law the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. People in the social media and the Internet press condemn the passage of the law, saying it will severely curb Internet freedoms and intimidate netizens into self-censorship.

Aquino defended the cybercrime act, specifically backing one of the most controversial elements of the law, which mandates that people who post defamatory comments online be given much longer jail sentences than those who commit libel in traditional media.

“I do not agree that it (the provision on libel) should be removed. If you say something libellous through the Internet, then it is still libellous… no matter what the format,” Aquino told reporters Friday.

Contentious

Another controversial element of the law, which went into effect on Wednesday, allows the government to monitor online activities, such as e-mail, video chats and instant messaging, without a warrant.

The government can also now close down websites it deems to be involved in criminal activities without a warrant.

Human rights groups, media organizations and netizens have voiced their outrage at the law, with some saying it echoes the curbs on freedoms imposed by dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the 1970s.

Philippine social media has been alight with protests this week, while hackers have attacked government websites and 10 petitions have been filed with the Supreme Court calling for it to overturn the law.

No unlimited freedoms

Aquino, whose mother led the “people power” revolution that toppled Marcos from power in 1986, said he remained committed to freedom of speech.

But he said those freedoms were not unlimited.

Aquino gave a broad defense of the law, which also seeks to stamp out non-controversial cybercrimes such as fraud, identity theft, spamming and child pornography.

Clean Internet

“The purpose of this law is to address the shortcomings of our system, so we can have a clean Internet,” he said.

US government-funded Freedom House was among the international rights watchdogs to criticize the law this week.

“Anyone who shares offending content could end up behind bars, even if he or she did not write it. Merely a Facebook ‘Like’ could be construed as libel,” it said in a statement.

“This act is a gross overreach that severely jeopardizes the Philippines’ status as a country with a free Internet.” With Agence France-Presse

“The purpose of this law is to address the shortcomings of our system, so we can have a clean Internet,” he said.
If you want a clean internet, then might as well declare the Philippines as a communist country…

    Dear Inquirer,

    Please do not be lazy.
A simple google search shows that Ana Marie Daep is  presently the Chief of the Communication Development and Research Division at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

    Sincerely,
    RJ

The story is clear. They were not able to confirm if the documents leaked were authentic. So to attribute the documents to the real Ms Daep is a case of lousy and misleading reporting. It could be legally problematic as well because that is tantamount to saying the spread sheet files were indeed genuine despite a lack of confirmation from Malacanang.

Read the related story (Palace unaware of leaked ‘government plans’):

“Two spread sheet files were made available via Twitter by the “hacktivist group” detailing the work and financial plan of an unspecified Philippine government unit. The documents were purportedly approved by a certain Ana Marie P. Daep.

Carandang said there was no employee at the Office of the President named Daep. The officer in charge for Social Marketing Service of the Department of Social Welfare and Development is Ana Marie P. Daep.”

      • https://twitter.com/rj_nieto Rj Nieto

Good point. However, as an exercise of due journalistic diligence, PDI could have included a cursory statement saying “from a cursory internet search, it shows that a certain Ms Daep is ….”.

I agree. Although they did that in the linked story

The figures on the peoples power are the people who went to EDSA para salubungin ang mga tangke, si Cardinal Sin, si Ramos, si Enrile, at si Gringo. but, but but without the people who went there hanggang makarating KAMI (oo, kasali ako) sa Malakanyang, nakatakas na si Macoy.

    • O.o

without enrile and ramos it would have been just another ordinary protest rally. it was enrile and ramos that made it a bigger and more effective one. i would’ve believed you were there, but with all your twisted facts, it’s more logical to believe that you were never there at all.

  • http://twitter.com/MarLouWang Marlou Wang

    To O.o:
Who do you will lead the people kung wala na si Macoy, of course si Cory, because people will not trust Ramos and Enrile noon.

    • O.o

Sorry Marlou, but that’s crap, and you know it.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XO7FTBDW3Q2ANFEYHJZY6SKASM dodgie

Where you there O.o? It’s hard to believe the truthfulness of your story. But I was there. I was 18 then. First time to vote on a national election. I still can remember  it clearly. By the way, do you know, June Keithley?

      • O.o

i wasn’t there, i was miles away. yeah, i remember june keithley. but if you’re really there as you claim, then you would have to agree with me.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XO7FTBDW3Q2ANFEYHJZY6SKASM dodgie

Actually No.People did not go there for JPE,FVR and Gringo. Back then, they were still hated by the Filipino people. It is true they started it. But the turning point in Edsa was really the time when the good Cardinal started calling people on the radio (Radio Veritas) to amass at Edsa to protect both Camp Crame and Camp Aguinaldo.
At that time it was June Keithley, the lady radio announcer, who kept echoing the call of Cardinal Sin to go to Edsa.Yes, Cory was not there but only because being the “true elected president” she was asked to be kept safe in a convent in Cebu.

      • O.o

Cory Aquino has no idea that enrile and ramos will revolt. by that time, she was not yet the ‘true elected president’. comelec never proclaimed her such. here’s the problem i’m seeing. people like you are too fanatical when it comes to the aquinos that you are blinded by the truth and now you’re twisting history despite the fact that everything i said is true and supported by history. all i ask is you research it and you will see i’m telling the truth. i have nothing against cory, but please don’t mislead the readers.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XO7FTBDW3Q2ANFEYHJZY6SKASM dodgie

I am sorry O,o,I am not a Cory fanatic. What I wrote is based on what I saw and heard during that time. This is coming from a personal account. I was there and you were not. You are taking your story from history books while I am taking mine from my life. Who do you think then is more credible. Let the people be the judge.

      • O.o

well gee, i wasn’t there, and you may be there, we can go on forever on that, but one thing is true dodgie, Cory Aquino wasn’t there. can you refute that?

      • O.o

i still remember the video when enrile moved from camp crame to camp aguinaldo to join ramos. people were cheering him. so your claim that they were hated by the filipino people is again, another attempt to mislead readers.

one thing i don’t understand is why telecom companies are not jining the people in the fight against this law. if any industry is to be directly affected by this stupid law, it’s really that of the telecoms! people may very well give up their cellphones, internet connections, and everything else that is telecom-related if only to avoid unwanted consequenes of this law that bring all of us back to the times of marcos!

  • jose_guev

  • O.o

Mr. Author, please correct your statement:

“Aquino, whose mother led the “people power” revolution that toppled
Marcos from power in 1986, said he remained committed to freedom of
    speech.”

This is wrong. Cory Aquino was in Cebu when the People Power Revolution started. It was Enrile and Ramos, later on joined by Cardinal Sin who started the people power revolution. Cory Aquino was never physically there.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7CX5MFGDDQ563IYR4T5NN4VOZM cuban dude

the people went to EDSA for her inspiring fight against marcos. i didn’t go there for cardinal sin, enrile, ramos… we were there because she inspired us to believe that we could defeat marcos, and by defending the enrile and co., we were one step closer to our dream. without her leadership, the people would not care to die for suckers like enrile and ramos. things just didn’t work out as planned though. sad.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/VUFRGRCCA5JXOLKEVCJQ3FBW3Y Concerned Citizen

I can only say for myself what made me go to Edsa and that is the call of Cardinal Sin to defend Enrile and Ramos.  Everybody had faith on the church then.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

That’s in the literal sense of it. But if we are to really examine history, it was not even Cory or Enrile or any of those Edsa leaders who pushed people into action. They simply served as rallying symbols of the Filipinos wrath, decades old disgust against a repressive and corrupt dictator.

In fact, if Cory did not run against Marcos and it was Doy Laurel for example who joined the snap presidential polls or anyone in the opposition, the Filipinos would still rally against them. Because the vote then for Cory, or the support for her during Edsa was actually not really a vote for her. It was a vote against Marcos.

That’s how bad the situation was then.

      • O.o

that’s your opinion. but actual history supports what i said.
it was enrile and ramos who started the people power revolution. cory aquino took no part in the actual revolution. she was just the one who benefited from it the most. i’m not saying it’s wrong, but facts need to be set straight. just because you think you’re a patriot and that you support cory aquino doesn’t mean you can change history.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

That’s when you are to view history in a very literal sense. But to really know history, you should know the context why and how they happened. The people in Edsa did not go there because of Enrile and Ramos. Therefore it is wrong to say the revolution was led by them.

There’s no event of such magnitude in history that happened like it was just a spur of the moment thing. They were always a result of long and interrelated events.

Ramos and Enrile can always claim they are the heroes of Edsa. Majority would say it’s Cory. Truth is they’re all wrong. It was the mass of people or the people’s movement that made the Edsa Revolution possible.

Majority of those people who went to Edsa that historic period in our history did not go there because of Cory or Enrile or Ramos. They massed up there because they hated Marcos so much and wanted him out.

      • O.o

Cory Aquino have no idea what was happening then. If I were you, I should read about the Edsa Revolution again. Cory Aquino didn’t led the Edsa Revolution. Tell me I’m wrong about this and give me a link so that I can read about this.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

History is not being studied in a chronological manner. What you are saying is a journal of events during Edsa revolution, the chronology of events. Then you are right.

I’m talking about history and historical context not a mere timeline that even a Grade 1 student can do.

And by the way, you kept on mentioning Cory when my position on the issue of Edsa history is very clear–my take on that issue is not personality-based. That’s too Zaide.

Anyway that’s your opinion. I will respect that.

      • O.o

Refute this statement: “Cory Aquino didn’t lead the People Power Revolution.”
No matter what you say, you can’t refute that. And that’s the bottom line.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

Review all my posts. Did I say that? I think you have a problem with reading comprehension.

      • O.o

You’re the one having a reading comprehension problem. All we need to do is read the history of your replies to my post.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

Did I say in any of my posts that Cory led the revolution? What I’ve been saying is you view history like it’s a journal, in a chronological fashion. You have to go beyond that because that is how historian Gregorio Zaide wrote our history. Try the likes of Renato Constantino or Ambeth Ocampo who have both presented Philippine history in a comprehensive manner and based on proper context.

      • O.o

view it in a comprehensive manner, but view it also in a chronological fashion, because history is replete with dates, and it would be stupid to tell the story of someone and then end it with ‘in the beginning…’

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

And so because they were the first to be there the heroes of Edsa are Enrile and Ramos. Bow!

What a stupdi way to view history

      • O.o

no, it’s not because they’re the first to be there. they are the ones who took arms and openly defied marcos. you really really need to read the history of the edsa revolution.

        Bow.

      • http://twitter.com/MarLouWang Marlou Wang

Mali! Maling-mali!!! Don’t forget Cardinal Sin! SINO ANG ME ANGAL!!!! SINO!!! SASAPUKIN KO SA BATOK!!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7CZYPZWNB37S6GTPBJQF6Y7BM Fight D Bigots

        Another Zaide approach to history.

      • O.o

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/VUFRGRCCA5JXOLKEVCJQ3FBW3Y Concerned Citizen

Both Oo and your statement are correct. It was the radio message of Cardinal Sin however that triggered people to flock to Edsa.

    • kalikasanipagtanggol

Distorted information! sabi ba yan sa libro ni manong johhny! then it’s not true dahil mahusay yan si manong sa flip-flopping ng statement!

      • O.o

there are other books and news articles you can read. i haven’t read the book yet, and may not read it anyway. why don’t you find out if what i said is distorted information? use the internet. do a little research.

    • http://twitter.com/gemaramil Gem Aramil
