OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT API, which allows developers to integrate the chatbot into apps and services.

As a result, we would see more businesses use AI chat technology for their websites and consumer products.

The company also said it is using a new model of the AI chatbot called gpt-3.5-turbo, which is “the best model for many non-chat use cases.”

FEATURED STORIES

API stands for Application Programming Interface, letting two different software interact.

As a result, it could automatically control programs based on user commands. More importantly, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said it was part of the company’s plans for ChatGPT.

He mentioned that to TechCrunch writer Kyle Wiggers during a video call ahead of the ChatGPT API launch.

“It takes us a while to get these APIs to a certain quality level,” Brockman stated. “I think it’s kind of this, like, just being able to meet the demand and the scale.”

The OpenAI chairman said the tech firm is using a new model of the AI chatbot, namely gpt-3.5-turbo.

The “turbo” refers to an “optimized, more responsive” version of GPT-3.5. Moreover, it has a unique pricing system, $0.002 per 1,000 tokens.

These tokens represent how ChatGPT API breaks down text. For example, OpenAI breaks down the sentence “ChatGPT is great!” into six tokens: “Chat,” “G,” “PT,” “is,” “great,” and “!.”

Consequently, you would need to pay $0.012 to process that sentence. If that seems confusing, don’t worry.

OpenAI launched a tool to help users figure out how many tokens their text samples will cost. If you want to see it in action, check out one of its early adopters: Snapchat.

Its parent company Snap was one of the first to use ChatGPT API. Snapchat implemented it for its My AI companion.

The social media platform limited the API to ensure it would comply with its trust and safety policies. My AI does not write essays or scientific papers.

Instead, it answers questions and performs casual tasks like writing poems or suggesting recipes. As a result, it functions like an “AI friend” on Snapchat.

Conclusion

OpenAI fulfilled one of its long-term goals by launching the ChatGPT API. It allows businesses to incorporate the AI chatbot into their products and services.
