Google Magi Will Bring AI To Online Searches | Inquirer Technology

Google Is Developing A New AI Search Engine Called Magi

10:48 AM April 18, 2023

Google is working on a new search engine that uses artificial intelligence called Magi. The news comes after it released the chatbot Bard, but it is a separate project. Soon, the company may implement Magi’s features on the existing search engine. As a result, our online searches will rely on artificial intelligence more than ever.

The tech giant said Magi would be a “far more personalized experience” than the existing search engine. It would adapt to a user’s needs to recommend relevant information. For example, it could suggest a list of products to buy or additional research data. Moreover, it would become more conversational than the current search engine.

That feature is similar to Microsoft Bing’s new conversational AI chatbot. Consequently, Google Magi might be a response to its rising popularity. Also, Samsung may swap Google for Bing as its default search engine for smartphones.

The New York Times was the first to report on the upcoming Google project. Magi is pronounced “ma-jai,” referring to a type of ancient sorcerer or magician.

According to its latest article, “The new search engine would offer users a far more personalized experience than the company’s current service, attempting to anticipate users’ needs.”

Google Magi will also “learn what users want to know based on what they’re searching.” Moreover, it would “offer lists of preselected options for objects to buy, information to research and other information.”

The new tool would also enable searchers to complete transactions. For example, you could use it to buy shoes or book flights directly on the search engine’s ads.

It would also become more conversational than the current version. For instance, request “software coding and write code based on a user’s request,” and it will answer.

Magi’s answers will also show an ad under that computer code. In other words, using Magi would be like talking to a human. Nowadays, Google has more than 160 employees working full-time to develop these features.

It says the new search engine “could put new AI technology in phones and homes all over the world.” However, Google admits this project is still in its early stages.

At the time of writing, the company said Google Magi would have a public launch in May. It would be exclusive to the United States and limited to a maximum of a million users.

Later, it would increase the number of users to 30 million by the end of 2023. The tech firm believes Magi “demonstrates Google’s ambitions to reimagine the search experience.”

Besides Google Magi, the company has been developing other AI projects. Bard is its recent major tool that works like ChatGPT. You may speak with it like a person, and it can produce various types of texts.

However, after making factual mistakes in its online ad, it made a huge blunder. As a result, the company lost a staggering $100 billion market value.

That fiasco slightly delayed Google’s entry into the AI scene. Yet, it continues its AI development with Google Magi and other projects:

  • Google Earth will incorporate AI in its mapping technology.
  • Artificial intelligence will also help people search for music via chatbot.
  • Also, Google GIFI would use AI to create images in Image results.
  • Tivoli Tutor would use a new language via open-ended AI text conversations.
  • Moreover, Google is developing Searchalong. It is a feature that lets users ask chatbot questions while browsing the internet on Google Chrome.

“Not every brainstorm deck or product idea leads to a launch, but as we’ve said before, we’re excited about bringing new A.I.-powered features to search, and will share more details soon,” Lara Levin, a Google spokesperson, told the New York Times. Also, Levin shared the following statement to Search Engine Land:

“We’ve been bringing AI to Google Search for years to not only dramatically improve the quality of our results, but also introduce entirely new ways to search, such as Lens and multisearch,” she said.

“We’ve done so in a responsible and helpful way that maintains the high bar we set for delivering quality information. Not every brainstorm deck or product idea leads to a launch, but as we’ve said before, we’re excited about bringing new AI-powered features to Search, and will share more details soon,” Levin added.

Conclusion

Bard may have been a flop, but Google Magi might successfully implement AI for online searches. As a result, artificial intelligence would change how we gain online information.

Based on Google’s reports, launching publicly may take a year or so. However, other companies like Microsoft may take over the Google Search Engine in the AI race.
