MANILA, Philippines — International internet speed monitoring firm Speedtest.net by Ookla noted an improvement in the average internet speed for both broadband and mobile in the Philippines in the month of March.

Based on Ookla’s recent Global Index report, the Philippines’ fixed broadband median speed improved to 90.57 megabits per second (Mbps) from the 90.03Mbps registered in February.

Meanwhile, mobile median speed also improved from 24.58Mbps in February to 25.63Mbps in March.

According to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in a statement on Wednesday, the said improvements translated to a 19.66 percent improvement in broadband speed and a 13.66 percent increase in mobile internet speed since the beginning of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration.

It then vowed that the improvement of internet speed remains a priority of the agency, adding that it had already asked telecommunications companies for its support in expediting the digitalization of small businesses and government services.

“Streamlining and speeding up the issuance of LGU (local government unit) permits in July 2020 generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to February 2023,” said the NTC.

“Improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure (cellular towers and fiber optic network) necessary in boosting services and connectivity,” it added.
