How to use ChatGPT online search
OpenAI released a feature that most users have requested since ChatGPT’s release: online search! Starting June 28, 2023, ChatGPT Plus subscribers may turn on this feature on the mobile app or website. However, there is one important caveat: it only lets you search on Bing.
That makes sense because OpenAI and Microsoft have worked to improve each other’s products and services. Still, this feature is worth it, even if you prefer Google. If you use ChatGPT daily, this upgrade will let you do more with generative AI.
That is why you should learn how to use this new feature. Fortunately, I will discuss activating and using the new ChatGPT online search. Later, I will explain the other upgrades of this AI chatbot.

ChatGPT has been a nifty tool with a cumbersome limitation. Its previous version can only use data from 2021 and before. Fortunately, the new “Browsing” feature will let ChatGPT search online with Bing:
- Log in to your OpenAI account on the ChatGPT app.
- Next, go to the New Features section.
- Select GPT-4 in the model switcher.
- Then, choose the Browse with Bing option in the drop-down menu.

As the name suggests, you may only search for online information with Microsoft’s Bing. Remember that this feature is only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. If you haven’t subscribed yet, here’s how to do it:
- Go to chat.openai.com.
- Open your existing OpenAI account or create a new one.
- Then, click the Upgrade to Plus button in the left-hand menu.
- Click the Upgrade Plan button.
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly, greatly enhancing your generative AI experience. It lets you access OpenAI’s latest large language model, GPT-4, and the other new features.
How to access ChatGPT’s other features
ChatGPT gained more functions last month. The OpenAI help page says the chatbot gained plugins and beta features on May 12, 2023. First, let’s discuss how to open the third-party plugins:
- Open the ChatGPT website and log in to your account.
- Next, choose the Plugins option from the model switcher.
- Click the Plugin Store option in the Plugins drop-down menu.
- Select plugins to install.
Plugins connect ChatGPT to other online services to provide new features. For example, the Expedia plugin can help you plan your next vacation with generative AI.
You can also turn on access to the beta features. Beta testing allows customers to try an early version of your product or service to check for flaws and glitches. Consequently, you may encounter problems while using them. Turn them on with the following steps:
- Open the ChatGPT website and log in to your account.
- Next, click on the Profile & Settings option.
- Choose the Beta features option.
- Then, turn on the feature’s you’d like to try.
On May 24, OpenAI allowed more countries to download and install the ChatGPT iOS app. Moreover, it introduced a new feature called shared links, letting you create and share ChatGPT conversations with fellow users. Here’s how it works:
- Click on a thread you’d like to share.
- Afterward, click the Share button.
- Select the Copy Link button.
What are the features of GPT-4?
ChatGPT online search is an exciting upgrade, but you must fully utilize its latest LLM. Check this list of GPT-4 features to see if you’ve missed any:
- GPT-4 can see and understand photos. Drag an image to the chatbot, and it will describe that picture. Moreover, you can ask for further information regarding parts of that image. For example, you can ask GPT-4 to describe a dog’s leash in the illustration.
- You can ask for the latest ChatGPT version to roleplay. As a result, it can perform complicated tasks. For example, you can ask the AI bot to review “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” as its author, Mark Twain.
- The new GPT version has a longer memory than the free one. GPT-3.5 can only remember 8,000 words, while GPT-4 can handle 64,000 words.
- GPT-4 can understand 26 languages like Ukrainian and Korean.
