MANILA, Philippines – Being marked with the ashen cross on the forehead seemed not enough for some netizens to commemorate the start of the Lenten season. And what better way to celebrate than an Ash Wednesday selfie?

Netizens used the hashtag “ashtag” in posting their selfies.

The trend started when a Washington-based senior online marketing manager Mark Alvez (@markalvez) posted on Twitter the star-studded selfie of actress Ellen Degeneres during the 2014 Academy Awards, with all the celebrities marked with the ashen cross on their foreheads.

“Take a selfie on Ash Wednesday, and tag it #ashtag,” Alvez said in his post.

It was actually the hashtag #AshWednesday that took Twitter by storm in the Philippines.
