Known as the world’s largest aircraft, the Airlander 10, which is also comically referred to as the “flying bum” owing to its shape, has successfully made its maiden flight at Cardington airfield in London.

The flight was initially scheduled for Aug. 14 but was moved to Aug. 17 due to some technical issues, Gizmodo reported.

The half-hour test flight still managed to draw in hundreds of curious spectators. Measuring 302 feet, the aircraft combines several elements to achieve flight. These are the fixed wings from planes and helicopters, as well as lighter-than-air-technology.

FEATURED STORIES

Hybrid Air Vehicles, the makers of the flying bum, says the vehicle is capable of staying aloft unmanned for over two years. This is because it was originally made for the US military as a surveillance aircraft but was scrapped back in 2013.

Unlike old blimps like the Hindenburg, the Airlander 10 utilizes helium, a non-combustable gas, to stay afloat. It can also withstand punctures made by bullets and operate in different weather conditions.
