8-year-old skateboarder is new social media darling

/ 08:31 AM September 20, 2016

At 8 years old, Sky Brown looks mature while acting out as a skateboarding prodigy.

Born in Miyazaki, Japan, Brown made history as the youngest female contestant at the Vans US Open Pro Series last week. “She skates bigger than she is,” a commentator noted during her qualifiers.

Brown, who has become a social media darling, hails from a family of professional skateboarders and surfers. Her father was a professional skater and her five-year-old brother, Ocean, can glide both in land and water like a “pro.” She attends an English preschool and goes skating at “The Shred Center” based in Miyazaki, Be-Street reported.

While other 8-year-olds sit back and relentlessly watch cartoons and anime, Brown is hooked in watching skating videos on YouTube. She idolizes elder female raw skaters like Alana Smith, Letticia Bufoni and Bryce Wetstien.

“It doesn’t matter that I’m a girl or that I’m small,” she explained in the #ShePlaysWeWin campaign. “My heart is big and strong and I can be as good as or even better than the boys or even big people.”

Her skateboarding stunts on YouTube and Instagram recently racked thousands of views.

The siblings have a bunch of sponsors such as Moonjelly Wetsuits , 5050 WaveSkates and XS Helmets. She also has an enormous following on her Instagram account, which she shares with her brother and which is managed by their mother. She has 52, 700 followers as of this writing.  Gianna Francesca Catolico
