Man on the moon, a potato, and other Filipino parodies of the super blue blood moon
It seems like people still cannot get over the hype surrounding the super blue blood moon. After howling out hugot lines to the super blue blood moon, Filipino netizens have now resorted to creating parodies of the eclipse.
The funny parodies came after an interesting night of countless emotional “hugots” that went viral on social media, with netizens posting one hugot after another in an attempt to numb personal tragic pains of the heart, or wallow in the realm of masochism and martyrdom.
One Twitter user (@HugotWords) kickstarted the parody when it posted last night a picture of a starry night sky with an angry face of President Rodrigo Duterte as the moon.

Meanwhile, actor and host Luis Manzano seemed to be on a comical high, posting two parody pictures of the moon in Instagram last night and today; the first one being a photo of a potato zoomed in. “Wow yung blood moon!!!!” Manzano wrote. “Ang gandaaaaa.” (Wow, the blood moon! It’s beautiful!)

In the other post, Manzano shared a picture of an orange-colored plastic basin hanging from a clothesline. “Ang ganda ng blood moon! Kakaiyak!!!” (The blood moon is so pretty! It makes me cry!)

The official Eat Bulaga Twitter page also didn’t let the opportunity to crack a joke pass, posting a photo of a city skyline with the moon overlooking the city. When zoomed in, the smiling face of comedian Jose Manalo can be seen on the moon.

The Varsitarian, the official student publication of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), had its own take on a super blue blood moon parody. It posted yesterday a photo of the eclipse with the finger of Miguel de Benavides, the founder of UST, pointing at it.
“The super blue blood moon poses beside the hand of the statue of UST founder Miguel de Benavides at 8:55 p.m. tonight,” wrote The Varsitarian. “This is the first time in 36 years that the celestial event (a combination of a super moon, a blue moon and a lunar eclipse) happened.”

Perhaps laughter really is the best medicine when it comes to a broken heart, or a night of crying to Gary Valenciano’s “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak”. Either way, the heartbreak, too, shall pass — just like the moon. JB
