More and more companies are putting their vital applications on the internet or the cloud to benefit from the agility and ability to access them anywhere. However, this shift also changes their cyber threat exposure and the way they keep their business secure.

Peter Maquera, Globe Business SVP for Enterprise Group, noted that cyberattacks are getting more sophisticated. Thus, while companies have to protect their network, they also have to ensure that their employees working from home will not fall victim to such attacks.

“Yesterday’s cybersecurity business model was like a castle surrounded by a typical wall where you’d have the citizens and the systems within. What’s happened with the pandemic and the work-from-home setup is that all those people who used to be within the walls have left, and even the systems are now outside the walls. So, how you protect your business has totally changed,” he said.

Citing the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, Maquera said about 90% of the BPO workforce were forced to work from home when the pandemic happened, compelling companies to look for ways to protect them from everywhere. On the other hand, criminal syndicates work overtime and make money teaching how to do phishing attacks, ransomware, or steal personal data.

“Criminals are getting quite sophisticated. So rather than just using antivirus and other solutions for anomalies and things that shouldn’t be in your network, you need to check for the behavior of things that are in there or should be in there. That’s why artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly becoming an important aspect of the cybersecurity solutions that you ought to be looking for,” he said.

Ransomware is the single biggest threat to information security at present. Ransomware levels remained high and increased steadily over the course of the year. It went up by 435% from 2019 to 2020, with a whopping $178,000 payout per event as of 2020.
