YouTube, in an effort to encourage creativity, will be making some changes to help new video and music artists get discovered.

The company says that they will start to highlight video makers who are “On the Rise” on the Trending Tab for the U.S. and this will be done on a weekly basis, reports Tech Crunch.

Every week, YouTube is going to select two creators and two music artists that will be featured on the Trending section. The factors that would determine who gets chosen includes having at least 1,000 subscribers, subscriber growth, watchtime, and viewcount to name a few.

FEATURED STORIES

YouTube was not specific on the exact details of their metrics. This is likely an effort to dissuade creators from taking advantage of the system to boost their chances of being featured.

The company did specify on a blog post that the selection process is not entirely up to an algorithm and will also have an editorial aspect. Creators will also be notified if they are featured.

Apart from the obvious benefits to creators, this change also helps YouTube in churning out new talent as the older ones wane in popularity or retire altogether. This keeps viewers watching and engaged on the platform to the benefit of YouTube as a company. Alfred Bayle
