MANILA, Philippines — The country’s fixed broadband and mobile download speeds have improved in November based on the latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index report released by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on Wednesday.

According to the Ookla report, the country’s fixed broadband speed improved to 75.02Mbps in November from the 71.08Mbps recorded the month prior.

The latest download speed signifies a 5.54 percent month-to-month improvement for fixed broadband and represents an improvement of 848.42 percent since the Duterte administration began in July 2016.

Meanwhile, mobile speed also increased as the country yielded an average download speed of 40.37Mbps this month. In October, mobile internet speed was at 38.12Mbps.

This indicates a 5.90 percent month-to-month improvement for mobile and represents an improvement of 442.61 percent since July 2016.

“President [Rodrigo] Duterte’s announcement to streamline and speed up the issuance of LGU (local government unit) permits in July 2020 generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to October this year vis-à-vis 2019,” the NTC said in a statement.

Improvement in the country’s internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructures such as cell towers and fiber optic networks that are necessary for boosting services and connectivity, it added.
