Most tech update websites will tell you that artificial intelligence (AI) is the way of the future. After all, ChatGPT sparked an AI revolution that prompted many to integrate this technology into products and services.

However, AI has limits since it isn’t the perfect solution to everyone’s problems. Ironically, the man who heralded the “Age of AI” shares this sentiment.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast that AI can’t solve problems “that humans are not good at dealing with.”

What else did Bill Gates say about AI?

He told host Dax Shepard that he experienced the strengths and weaknesses of AI himself:

“I’m using it all the time and saying, ‘Okay, no, it’s not good enough for this, but wow, it is good enough for that.’”

The billionaire found the technology insufficient in solving Soduku number puzzles. According to  Business Insider, Gates believes “it struggles with recursive reasoning.”

He’s also figuring out how to integrate AI tools into his work process. As a result, he concluded: 

“If it’s a problem that humans are not good at dealing with, then present techniques don’t create some novel approach,” Gates stated.

In other words, AI models aren’t magical. Instead, they perform well-documented tasks faster than humans.

Business Insider said the key is to have “data that embodies the expertise.” For example, it can measure how nitrogen affects crop yields because agriculture experts can already do it.

In contrast, AI can’t answer how to achieve happiness and relationship satisfaction because we’ve struggled with these for years.

“I actually think in mental counseling AIs will play a role, but boy, we’re going to have to be very careful about that,” Gates said. “That’s going to require a lot of work that has not been done yet.”
