PC download charts: ‘Spellforce 3’, ‘Getting Over It’, ‘ETS2 – Italia’
As this year’s PC breakout hit (and, from Dec. 12, a late game of the year contender on Xbox One) “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” (PUBG) nears nine months straight atop the Steam charts, several other new releases make positive impressions.
Fantasy adventure “Spellforce 3”, mythological farce “Getting Over It”, and the Italian expansion for “Euro Truck Simulator” enter the top five on PC gaming platform Steam, separated from PUBG by 2015’s continually popular “Grand Theft Auto V”.
It’s 11 years since the debut of real-time strategy and fantasy adventure game “Spellforce 2”, but the genre blend is still novel and the attention to visual splendor still evident in “Spellforce 3”.
As “Spellforce 2” benefited from several significant updates over the years since its 2006 launch, so too 2013’s curiously compulsive haulage game “Euro Truck Simulator 2” receives its fourth territorial makeover.
After Eastern Europe (“Going East!” in September 2013), Northern Europe (“Scandinavia” May 2015), and France (“Vive la France!” in December 2016), the “Italia” pack has arrived, expanding official “ETS2” coverage from the country’s northernmost regions to include cities, roads and landmarks from top to tip.
In at fifth on Steam is “Getting Over It”, the latest challenge to digital dexterity from Bennett Foddy, creator of long-jumping spoof “QWOP”, and its follow-ups in the equine “CLOP” and wall climbing “GIRP”.
Simultaneously an experiment in tolerable frustration and a meditation on the nature of mental obstacles, “Getting Over It” continues a tradition of almost impossible contest, its lead character stuck in a cauldron, tasked with conquering a mountain, and able to move using only a long hammer for leverage.
As well as Windows PC and Mac, it’s also available for iOS via Apple’s App Store.
