Amazon Enters The AI Race With Bedrock

04:46 AM April 14, 2023

Amazon recently announced its new AI cloud service called Bedrock, which enables developers to enhance their software with artificial intelligence. Consequently, it enters the generative AI race with other tech firms like Microsoft and Google. As a result, Amazon Bedrock could expand the business applications of AI worldwide.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will use it to offer access to its first-party language models collectively known as Titan. One Titan model can generate blog posts and emails; another assists with online searches and personalization. Also, it will offer large language models from startups like Anthropic and AI21.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy elaborated on Amazon Bedrock during an interview with CNBC. He said, “What they [companies] want to do is they want to work off of a foundational model that’s big and great already, and then have the ability to customize it for their own purposes.” Jassy added, “That’s what Bedrock is.”

Amazon Bedrock’s website says it is available in “limited preview,” meaning it will only share a few details about its features. Let us explore the ones it announced.

FEATURED STORIES

First, Bedrock will be a simple way to find and access high-performance foundational models (FMs). They are more massive than the large language models used by ChatGPT and other AI bots.

As a result, they can perform more tasks than other AI models. Amazon’s new platform will enable clients to incorporate FMs into their systems.

Second, it will reduce the time and money needed to maintain AI infrastructure. As mentioned, AWS will ensure customers can access AI models from its cloud server.

The website says it will help customers find the FM suitable for their needs and deploy them quickly. These include the multilingual LLM Jurassic-2 and the text-to-image generator Stable Diffusion.

Third, clients can adjust FMs with their data and integrate them with other tools. For example, let us say you are a fashion retailer who needs to develop targeted ads for your new handbags.

You can provide examples of your best-performing taglines from past campaigns and product descriptions. In response, the platform will generate display ads, web copy, and social media posts for your new handbags.

Bedrock is scalable, allowing small businesses and large corporations to use its foundational models. As a result, Amazon believes it will “democratize” access to artificial intelligence.

Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president for machine learning at Amazon, said the company has been working on AI for more than 20 years. Moreover, AWS has gained over 100,000 customers since then.

He also said Amazon ensures the platform will be affordable and convenient. “We always actually launch when things are ready, and all these technologies are super early,” he said.

Amazon Bedrock is not the only one offering customizable AI for businesses. On April 12, Alibaba announced its new ChatGPT-like tool Tongyi Qianwen.

The name roughly translates to “truth from a thousand questions.” The Chinese eCommerce brand said it would use Tongyi Qianwen to create large language models for customers.

Zhou Jingren, Alibaba Cloud’s Chief Tech Officer, said the new AI chatbot would enable businesses to keep up with the rise of AI. “We hope to facilitate businesses from all industries with their intelligence transformation and, ultimately, help boost their business productivity,” he said.

Like Amazon Bedrock, Alibaba AI will help save time and energy training new AI models. As a result, companies can afford to implement AI voice assistants and customer services.

Meanwhile, Microsoft 365 Copilot adds generative AI functions to MS Office apps. For example, it writes, edits, and summarizes text for Word.

PowerPoint Copilot turns your ideas into a designed presentation. Also, Excel with Copilot analyzes data, identifies trends, and creates data visualizations in minutes.

Conclusion

Amazon Bedrock will soon offer customizable AI models to business clients. As a result, they can improve their products and services with artificial intelligence.

It seems more companies want to keep up with the AI race. Soon, their innovations will shift our daily lives in unprecedented ways.
