FEATURED STORIES

Six hours ago, Elon Musk and his new company xAI surprised the world with tweets. The firm’s official Twitter page pondered, “What are the most fundamental unanswered questions?”

Elon Musk replied, “Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality.” Click on the Twitter page’s link to redirect you to xAI’s official website.

Unfortunately, the homepage doesn’t share clearer details about its purpose, products, and services. Instead, it only says, “The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe.”

“Our team is led by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. We have previously worked at DeepMind, OpenAI. Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto,” it added. Then, it lists the following people as its members:

  1. Elon Musk
  2. Igor Babuschkin
  3. Manuel Kroiss
  4. Yuhuai (Tony) Wu
  5. Christian Szegedy
  6. Jimmy Ba
  7. Toby Pohlen
  8. Ross Nordeen
  9. Kyle Kosix
  10. Greg Yang
  11. Guodong Zhang
  12. Zihang Dai

The xAI website also said Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety, is the team advisor. Moreover, it reminds the public it is a separate company from X Corp and Musk’s other businesses.

Elon Musk repeatedly mentioned his plans to create a super app named “X,” using Twitter as its starting point. Also, xAI is different from XAI or explainable AI.

IBM defines it as a “set of processes and methods that allows human users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms.” Remember that Elon Musk’s company has a lowercase “x.”

More importantly, Musk’s new company trying to “understand reality” doesn’t clarify its goals. After all, such a lofty, abstract objective is difficult to connect to the more concrete method of creating AI systems.

If you follow the Tesla CEO’s actions, you may find it odd he’s exploring AI systems. In March 2023, he and other tech leaders signed a petition named “Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter.”

The message appealed to AI firms to suspend artificial intelligence development for at least six months to give time for various nations to adapt. Otherwise, AI may take over significant parts of society.

Later, various sources revealed he was trying to create an AI chatbot. Elon Musk called it “TruthGPT” and wants it to be “less restrictive and politically correct.”

That chatbot and xAI are Elon Musk’s only known artificial intelligence projects at the time of writing. However, he revealed other tech developments at last year’s Tesla AI Day.

The most eye-catching reveal was the humanoid robot Optimus. He said these machines would perform monotonous, dangerous, and boring tasks.

Optimus bots would cook meals, mow lawns, and care for older people. Soon, he will provide these autonomous robots to millions of households worldwide.

Conclusion

Elon Musk launched a new AI company called xAI. The artificial intelligence firm said on its official website it aims to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

At the time of writing, we do not have details regarding its products and services. The homepage only lists the company’s vision and staff members.
